Learning to Fail: A Love Letter to Messy Beginnings

I love learning new things.

Always have.

Whether it’s diving into new tech, playing with design tools, or exploring a fresh idea — the spark of learning lights me up. But what I don’t love (and honestly kind of suck at)?
Being bad at it first.

That uncomfortable, clunky, not-quite-getting-it stage?
The part where I feel awkward and slow and self-critical?

Yep. That’s where I can unravel.

Unrealistic Expectations: My Uninvited Learning Partner

Somewhere along the line, I picked up a belief that I should be naturally good at everything I try — straight out of the gate. No awkward first attempts. No trial and error. No “what does this button do?” panic.

Just… immediate brilliance.

(And I know. I know how wild that sounds. But tell that to the knot in my stomach when I don’t nail something right away.)

The Myth of the Fast Learner

We glorify the idea of being a “fast learner” but we rarely talk about how learning is meant to be messy. The stumbles are not a sign of failure; they’re a feature of growth.

And yet, when I find myself struggling with a new skill, my first thought isn’t, “Yay, I’m learning!”
It’s usually something closer to:

“Why can’t I figure this out already?”
“Am I not cut out for this?”
“Maybe I’m just not good enough.”

Those thoughts? Not helpful.
Also? Not true!

What I’m Practising Instead

I’m practising sitting with the discomfort.
Letting myself be a beginner.

I’m trying to remember that learning doesn’t always look productive. Sometimes it looks like staring at the screen. Re-reading the same tutorial three times. Asking the “dumb” question. Trying. Failing. Trying again.

And that’s okay.

Because the more I resist the failure, the longer I stay stuck in it.

But when I make space for it? When I expect it — and even welcome it — I move through it faster, gentler, and with way more grace.

Maybe You’re Like Me

Maybe you also set the bar sky-high for yourself.
Maybe you hate being bad at things, even the first time.
Maybe you expect excellence, even when you’re still finding your feet.

If that’s you — hello, friend. You’re not alone.

Let’s rewrite the story.
Let’s learn failure.
Let’s honour the stumble as part of the stride.

Because messy beginnings still lead to beautiful things.
And you’re allowed to grow at your own pace.

With love and lots of pony sparkle,

Heart and Signature with Kisses
